Once a Booming Rail Town
Thurmond was established by Captain William D. Thurmond and incorporated in 1903. In its 1920s heyday, more coal passed through Thurmond than Cincinnati. Today, this historic town is known for its scenic beauty, outdoor recreation, and rich history. Visitors can explore hiking and biking trails, enjoy fishing and boating on the New River, and experience the town’s past through its well-preserved structures.
