The Thurmond Triathlon is not your average race—it's a one-of-a-kind, beginner-friendly, non-competitive adventure challenge that invites participants to run, bike, and paddle through the stunning New River Gorge.It’s a celebration of the landscape, the people, and the enduring spirit of Thurmond.
Race Breakdown

3.5-Mile Run
Begins on Thurmond Road, taking you past forested ridges and scenic river views. -
2-Mile Paddle
A calm water canoe or kayak trip down the New River to Thurmond Depot. -
7.5-Mile Bike Ride
A scenic ride along the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway’s historic route.
Why It’s Special
All skill levels welcome – This is about the journey, not the finish time
Scenic as it gets – Few triathlons have such a rich backdrop of mountains, rivers, and railroads.
Family-friendly fun – Great for beginners, solo racers, or families looking for a unique bonding experience.
Proceeds support local conservation and history efforts.

Thurmond Train Day
When: Every summer, typically in July
Where: Thurmond Depot & Rail Yard
What to Expect:
Celebrate Thurmond’s rich railroad legacy with live music, historic train tours, kids activities, and speakers from the National Park Service. Amtrak often makes a special stop, and reenactors bring the town to life.

A cozy winter tradition! Join the Thurmond community and park rangers for a historic depot decorating event, hot cocoa, and old-fashioned holiday cheer.
